Via Ferrata Maximiliansteig - Central Dolomites

3-Day Via Ferrata Hut-to-Hut in the Dolomites

A short, private 3-day adventure through the Catinaccio–Rosengarten mountains, staying in mountain huts and climbing classic Dolomites via ferratas.

If you are looking for a 3 day via ferrata hut to hut Dolomites experience but do not have enough time for a longer trek, this private three-day itinerary offers a concentrated way to experience the heart of the Dolomites.

Over three days, we cross the spectacular Catinaccio–Rosengarten mountains, combining three classic via ferratas with high-mountain trekking and two nights in traditional alpine huts.

This is a short hut-to-hut via ferrata trip in the Dolomites for hikers and mountain enthusiasts who want the atmosphere of a genuine multi-day mountain adventure without committing to a week-long program.

The itinerary is private and guided personally by me, an IFMGA/UIAGM mountain guide born and raised in the Dolomites. Your experience, fitness, expectations and the actual mountain conditions are considered when planning and adapting the program.

A easy logistic access save lot of money

You don’t need rent a car because you can arrive at Bolzano by train (check the Trenitalia webpage) from every airport around the Dolomites territory, and then you will travel, day per day with the car of the mountain guide (included in the price).

DAY 1 – Via Ferrata Roda de Vaèl

via ferrata dolomites roda vael

We begin our 3-day via ferrata hut-to-hut adventure in the Dolomites with the Via Ferrata Roda de Vaèl, in the spectacular Catinaccio–Rosengarten group.

The first day starts with a relatively moderate via ferrata. The route traverses the Roda de Vaèl peak from north to south, combining exposed sections with spectacular views across the Central Dolomites.

It is an excellent first stage for getting used to the exposure, the rock and the rhythm of a multi-day via ferrata trek.

At the end of the day we reach Rifugio Fronza alle Coronelle, where we spend our first night in the mountains.

DAY 2 – Via Ferrata Santner

Approach: 40 min

Via ferrata: 2 h 30 min

Walk to the next hut: 2 h

Total: approximately 5-6 h

Vertical gain: 751 m

Via Ferrata Santner Pass

The second day continues naturally through the Catinaccio–Rosengarten mountains with the historic Via Ferrata Santner.

The Santner is a classic example of the original Dolomites via ferrata concept. It combines sections protected by iron cable with exposed scrambling on natural rock. Where appropriate, I use the climbing rope to provide additional protection.

The route takes us into the spectacular landscape of the Vajolet Towers and gives the second day a very different character from the first.

After completing the via ferrata, we continue on foot towards Rifugio Principe, where we spend our second night.

By this point I also have a much clearer idea of how the group is moving in the mountains, allowing me to assess the best way to approach the final day.

DAY 3 – Via Ferrata d’Antermoja

Approach: 10 min

Via ferrata: 3 h 30 min

Walk to the next hut: 1 h 30 min

Total: approximately 5 h

Vertical gain: 657 m

The final day takes us to Antermoja, 3,007 m, the second major summit of the Catinaccio–Rosengarten group.

From Rifugio Principe, the approach to the Via Ferrata d’Antermoja is very short.

via ferrata dolomites antermoja

The route climbs the western face of the mountain before crossing the summit from west to east. The descent on the opposite side makes this a genuine mountain traverse rather than simply an ascent followed by the same descent.

We finish the main three-day itinerary by descending towards Rifugio Antermoja.

The third stage is shorter than the previous two, leaving some flexibility to adapt the route according to weather, conditions and the fitness of the group.

End of the 3-day itinerary at Rifugio Antermoja.

  • 2 nights B&B accommodation in Bolzano (one night before and one night after the tour)
  • complete set of technical via ferrata equipment.
  • advice about equipment and preparation before the trip.
  • assistance with the logistics aspects of your arrival in the Dolomites.
  • transportation only during the itinerary,

Cable-car tickets, lunches and drinks are not included unless specifically agreed.

Why choose a 3-day Dolomites via ferrata hut-to-hut trip?

Three days is an excellent compromise if you want to experience the Dolomites as a genuine mountain journey but have limited time available.

Instead of returning to the valley every evening, you move from one mountain hut to the next, carrying only what you need for the trek and spending the nights above the valley floor.

During these three days you experience three different styles of Dolomites via ferrata:

  • Roda de Vaèl: a panoramic traverse to progressively enter the world of via ferrata;
  • Santner: a historic route combining cable-protected sections and exposed scrambling;
  • Antermoja: a higher mountain traverse reaching a 3,007 m summit.

This makes the program much more than three individual day trips.

It is a genuine hut-to-hut mountain journey through the Dolomites!

A private itinerary with your own mountain guide

This is not a scheduled group tour.

You travel with your own private IFMGA/UIAGM mountain guide, allowing the itinerary to be adapted to the people actually taking part in the trip.

Before the trek, we can discuss your previous mountain experience, your expectations and the type of experience you are looking for.

During the trek, I assess the conditions and the group day by day.

Weather, snow, via ferrata conditions, mountain hut availability and your physical condition can all influence the best solution.

The objective is not simply to complete three via ferratas.

The objective is to have three good days in the Dolomites.

When is the best time for this trip?

The normal season for this itinerary is the summer and early autumn mountain season.

The exact period depends on the snow conditions, the opening of the mountain huts and the conditions of the via ferratas.

Conditions in the Dolomites can change considerably from one year to another. For this reason, I prefer to evaluate the actual mountain situation rather than promise that a particular itinerary will always be possible on a particular date.

If conditions require a change, I can adapt the itinerary or propose a suitable alternative.

Want to stay longer?

If three days are not enough, this itinerary can become the starting point for a longer Dolomites via ferrata hut-to-hut trek.

The wider program can be extended beyond the Catinaccio–Rosengarten group, adding further classic via ferratas in the Central Dolomites.
